Does a higher quality setting use more battery on iPhone?

Barely, and not in a way worth planning around. A higher quality setting means more audio data captured and encoded per second, which is real work — but it is a small slice of what a phone is doing during a long recording, next to keeping the microphone session open the entire time regardless of setting. If battery is the worry, the quality dial is not where to look.

It is a reasonable thing to wonder before starting a two-hour recording: does picking the highest setting quietly cost you battery you will want later? The instinct makes sense — more data usually means more work, and more work usually means more power. It just is not the biggest thing happening while a phone records, so it is worth separating what the setting actually changes from what else is going on at the same time.

What the quality setting actually changes

Voice Studio records mono AAC audio in .m4a, and the standard, high and ultra settings each choose a different sample rate: 22,050 Hz, 44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz. A sample rate is how many times per second the microphone signal is measured and turned into a number. Ultra measures roughly twice as often as standard, so there is more raw data to run through the AAC encoder and more of it to write to storage every second the recording is going.

That is genuinely more work than standard does. The question is how much it matters next to everything else the phone is doing at the same time — and audio encoding, even at the higher end of these three rates, is a small computation by the standards of a modern phone processor. It is nowhere near the kind of sustained, heavy work that visibly moves a battery percentage.

What a phone spends most of its power on during a recording

The sample rate is one input into a much bigger picture, and it is not the largest one. In rough order of what actually costs a phone power over a long recording:

That is the trade-off worth thinking about when picking a setting: how much space a long recording is worth, and whether the source actually needs the extra detail a higher sample rate captures. Neither of those is a battery question, and treating the setting as one just shifts attention away from what would actually help — for a two-hour recording, checking available storage matters more than which of the three rates is selected.

If battery during a long recording is the actual concern

The levers that make a real difference are the ones above the quality setting on that list. Keeping the screen locked instead of leaving it on removes the single largest cost. Deciding whether a recording needs to be transcribed immediately or can wait until later — since transcription is a separate step from recording, not something that has to happen live — avoids running Apple's on-device recognition on top of an already-long recording session. Live monitoring and noise reduction, where used, are also doing real-time audio processing on top of the recording itself, which costs more than the sample rate does. The quality setting, by comparison, is close to a non-factor.
