Does a voice recorder app need Local Network access on iPhone?

Short answer: no, not for recording, transcribing, playing back or exporting anything. Local Network is a narrower permission than it sounds, and it is easy to conflate it with "does this app use the internet" — which is a different question with a different answer.

iOS has asked for Local Network access as its own separate permission since iOS 14, and it is one of the more confusing prompts on the phone, because the name sounds like it should mean "this app connects to things." It means something much more specific than that.

What Local Network access actually gates

The permission covers discovering and talking to other devices sitting on the same Wi-Fi network as your phone, using protocols like Bonjour and mDNS — the technology that lets a phone find a nearby printer, an AirPlay speaker, a smart TV, or a laptop running its own local server, without either side knowing the other's address in advance. Granting it lets an app scan that local network and see what else is on it.

That is a real capability with real privacy weight: a list of every device on your home or office Wi-Fi is a small map of the room you are standing in. It is also completely unrelated to whether an app can reach the wider internet at all.

Why this is a different question from "does it use the internet"

An app can talk to a server on the other side of the world — checking for updates, sending a request to a transcription service, anything routed out through your router to the internet at large — without ever touching Local Network access, because none of that involves discovering another device on your own Wi-Fi. The two permissions protect two different things: Local Network protects who else is in the room with you; ordinary internet access is about where your own data goes once it leaves the house. Turning Local Network off for an app does not cut its internet connection, and turning it on does not open one either.

Why a plain recorder does not need it

Recording writes audio to the phone's own storage. Playback reads it back from the same place. Transcription, when it needs to run somewhere other than the phone, is a request to Apple's speech service out on the internet — not a conversation with a nearby laptop. Markers, search, and exporting a TXT or JSON file out through the share sheet or into the Files app are all self-contained operations on data the app already holds. None of that involves finding, addressing, or exchanging anything with another device sitting on the same Wi-Fi.

Why a recorder might ask for it anyway

There is a genuine reason this permission shows up on some recording apps: casting playback to an AirPlay speaker or a smart TV, or pushing an exported file straight to a computer or network drive on the same Wi-Fi without going through Files, iCloud, or email first. Both are real, narrow features built around discovering a specific nearby device — not something recording or transcribing the audio itself ever requires.

What happens if you say no

Nothing that touches the core job. Recording, transcription, playback, markers, search, and exporting through the ordinary share sheet or Files app all keep working exactly the same, because none of them were ever routed through a nearby device in the first place. The only thing that stops is a genuine local-network feature, if the app has one — casting to a speaker, or a direct-to-computer transfer — and an app that never built that feature has nothing to lose by not asking for the permission at all.

Checking who already has it

Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network lists every app currently holding this permission, with a toggle to revoke it per app at any time. It is worth a glance for any recording app on the list, since casting to a nearby speaker or a direct local transfer is the only honest reason it would need to be there.

How Voice Studio handles it

Voice Studio never asks for Local Network access. Playback stays inside the app, and getting a recording or a transcript out happens through the ordinary iOS share sheet or the Files app — the same route any file takes out of any app — rather than by discovering another device on the Wi-Fi. Transcription tries on-device first and only reaches out to Apple's speech service over the general internet if that local attempt comes back empty or fails; that is the ordinary internet path, unrelated to Local Network entirely, and it is the only network request the app ever makes.
