How much space does a voice memo backup actually take?
Short answer: barely any, and it does not grow the way you would expect. A full backup is every recording's details and transcript in one file — not the recordings themselves — and text takes up a small fraction of what audio does for the same stretch of speech.
The word "backup" carries a lot of baggage from photos and videos, where it means something you start before bed and check on in the morning, or a cloud plan you had to upgrade for. A voice memo backup, when it is just the record of what was said rather than the audio itself, does not behave like that at all, and the gap between the two is worth understanding before you assume one implies the other.
What is actually in the file
A full backup export is a record of every recording's details and its transcript — title, date, duration, the transcribed text — packed into one file. It is not the audio repackaged the same way. The recordings stay as individual files, and a backup like this is meant to restore what the app knows about your library, not to be a second copy of the sound itself.
That distinction is the entire reason the file stays small. You are not backing up hours of sound. You are backing up the words that came out of it.
Why text and audio are not the same kind of big
Compressed audio still has to represent a continuous waveform, tens of thousands of times a second, even after a codec like AAC throws away the parts a listener will not miss. That is fundamentally a lot of data per second, no matter how good the compression is. Text does not work that way at all — a word costs a handful of bytes regardless of how long it took to say. A sentence that takes four seconds to speak might be thirty characters of transcript, and thirty characters is a rounding error next to four seconds of even well-compressed audio.
This is not a setting or a design choice either format could opt out of. It is the difference between storing a sound and storing a description of a sound, and a description is always going to be smaller — often by two or three orders of magnitude — because it threw away everything except the words.
Putting real numbers next to each other
A single transcript, exported on its own, runs to a handful of kilobytes — a page or two of text, roughly, for a normal-length recording. Compressed mono voice audio, by contrast, runs to tens of megabytes per hour. Line those two up and a backup covering months of recordings, all as transcript text, can still land smaller than a single hour of the audio it is describing.
Scale that out. A library of a few hundred recordings with generous transcripts is still, in total, a text file measured in single-digit megabytes at most — the kind of thing that opens instantly and attaches to an email without a second thought. That holds even for someone who records daily and lets months pile up, because the growth is happening in words, not in waveform.
What this actually means for you
- There is no reason to put off making one because it feels like a heavy operation. It is a fast export, not an overnight sync.
- It is small enough to move by whatever is easiest — attach it to an email to yourself, drop it in a notes app, send it over a cable — without needing an upload service built for large files.
- It is not a substitute for backing up the audio itself. If the recordings matter as much as the words, export the .m4a files separately; the backup only carries the transcript and the details around it, not the sound.
When it could start to add up (it still probably will not)
Nothing here is literally zero, and a genuinely enormous personal archive — thousands of long recordings, all transcribed — is more text than a handful of notes. Even then, text grows slowly compared to almost anything else competing for space on a phone; a library that size is still unlikely to challenge the storage a few dozen photos would use, let alone what video does. If you are curious exactly how big yours is rather than taking a general answer on faith, export it once and check the file size yourself — that is a more honest number than any figure quoted here, because it is your actual library rather than an average one.
