What audio formats can you import into a voice recorder on iPhone?
Short answer: anything iOS already knows how to play — .m4a, .mp3, .wav and a few others — imports and opens without a second thought. A handful of older or less common formats do not, and the reason has nothing to do with which app you picked to import it into.
Importing sounds like a feature the app itself provides, so it is a reasonable guess that a "no" from one recorder might be a "yes" from another. For audio formats specifically, that guess is usually wrong. An app that supports importing an existing audio file is not shipping its own decoder for every format that has ever existed — it is handing the file to the same audio-playback machinery that already runs Music, the Files app and everything else on the phone, and asking it to open the file. What opens without any conversion
The common ones just work, because they are the same formats the rest of iOS already plays natively:
- .m4a — an AAC recording inside an MPEG-4 container, the exact format an iPhone's own microphone produces.
- .mp3 — the most widely used lossy format there is, playable everywhere including iOS.
- .wav — uncompressed audio, larger per minute than the other two but never a decoding problem.
- .aiff — Apple's own uncompressed format, native on iOS for the same reason .wav is.
If a voice note, an old recording or a file someone sent you is in one of these, it imports the same way regardless of where it came from — an old handheld recorder, a laptop, another phone entirely. iOS does not care about the file's history, only the format it is actually in.
What tends to need converting first
A smaller set of formats fall outside what iOS decodes on its own, and they show up more often than you would expect, mostly from older or budget Android recorder apps: .amr and .3gp (sometimes saved as .3ga) were common defaults on that side for years, built around codecs designed for compressing phone-call-quality speech tightly rather than for general compatibility. Voice notes and calls saved as Opus packed inside an .ogg container are another one — common on some messaging and recording tools, and again not something iOS opens directly. None of these are exotic or broken files; they simply were not among the formats Apple built native decoding for.
An import attempt on one of these typically just fails to bring the file in, rather than importing it broken or silent — which is a useful signal in itself. If a file refuses to import while another one from the same batch works fine, the format is the first thing worth checking, not the app.
The file extension is a clue, not a guarantee
Most of the time the extension tells you what you are holding — a .mp3 is an MP3. But it is worth knowing it can mislead in both directions. A container can hold more than one thing inside it: an .m4a almost always holds AAC, but the same container can also hold Apple Lossless, which is a different codec wearing the same extension. Going the other way, some older recorder apps used non-standard or renamed extensions for what is really an AMR or similar file underneath. If a file is refusing to import and the extension looks ordinary, that mismatch is worth suspecting before assuming the file itself is damaged.
A quick way to check before you try
Because importing relies on the same playback iOS uses everywhere, there is a fast test that does not depend on any particular recorder app at all: open the file directly in the Files app, or hand it to Music, and see whether it plays. If it plays there, it will import into an app that supports importing audio, because both are drawing on the identical piece of iOS. If it does nothing or errors out in Files too, that confirms the problem is the format itself, not the recorder app you were trying it in — which saves you from re-testing the same file across three different apps looking for one that "handles it better."
Converting a file that will not import as-is
A file in one of the less-common formats is not stuck — it just needs one extra step before it reaches an iPhone.
