Why does my iPhone recording have a click or pop sound?

A click or a pop stands out precisely because everything around it sounds normal. That is the tell. The most common cause: something touched the phone or the microphone

- Setting the phone down on a table or picking it back up mid-recording.
- A finger brushing across the microphone opening while adjusting the phone’s position.
- A case rattling against a hard surface, or a loose ring or stand clicking against it.
- Fabric — a pocket, a bag, a sleeve — dragging across the microphone if the phone was moved while recording.
- Tapping the screen to check the timer, which the microphone can pick up as a faint knock through the body of the phone.
None of this is a sign of a fault in the recording. It is exactly what it sounds like: a brief physical contact captured the moment it happened, the same way a microphone at a lectern picks up a knuckle tapping it.
The second most common cause: switching where the audio is going
iOS treats which microphone and speaker are active as a single, system-level decision, not something an individual app owns. Connect a pair of Bluetooth headphones, disconnect them, plug in a wired pair, or have the phone hand off to a car’s Bluetooth mid-recording, and the system has to switch the active audio route while the recording keeps running. That switch is a real hardware event — one input shutting down and another starting up — and it is common for it to produce an audible click or pop right at the moment it happens, independent of which app is recording or what settings it uses.
This is why the click so often lands at a moment you can actually place afterwards: right when a pair of headphones connected, or right when they died and the phone fell back to its own microphone. If a click lines up with one of those moments, that is almost certainly what it was.
What a phone call leaves behind is a gap, not usually a click
A genuine interruption — a call arriving, an alarm going off — is a different mechanism again, and it is worth not confusing the two. iOS hands the microphone over completely for that, and a well-behaved recorder pauses when the interruption begins and resumes into the same file once it ends. A contact click recorded at standard quality is the same click recorded at ultra; a finer sample rate just stores it in smaller time slices. There is no quality tier built to filter out a single mechanical event, because that was never the kind of thing a sample rate setting touches.
What actually reduces how often it happens
- Decide on a Bluetooth or wired accessory before you press record, rather than connecting or disconnecting one partway through — that removes the route switch that causes the most predictable version of this.
- Once recording starts, leave the phone alone. Set it down where it will not need moving, rather than picking it up or repositioning it partway through.
- A case that rattles or a ring holder that can knock against a surface is worth removing for anything you cannot re-record.
- If a route change is unavoidable — headphones running low on battery mid-recording, say — treat the click as a signpost for what happened rather than a defect to chase, and check the audio around that timestamp before assuming something is wrong with the whole file.
Can you remove one after the fact?
