How to reduce background noise in an iPhone recording
The instinct is to look for a setting to turn up. The fix for background noise almost never lives in a settings menu — it lives in where the phone is sitting and which room you chose before you pressed record.
Every recording is really two signals mixed together: the voice you want, and everything else the microphone picked up at the same time. A phone cannot tell those apart while it is recording — it has no idea which sound is the one you care about — so the only real leverage you have is changing the ratio between them before the recording starts, not after.
The kinds of noise, and why the source matters
Steady noise
A fan, an air conditioner, a refrigerator, traffic through a window. This kind sits at a fairly constant volume, which is exactly why it is easy to stop noticing while you are in the room and impossible to ignore on playback. Your ear adapts to it in real time; the recording does not.
Room noise
Hard, bare surfaces — tile, glass, an empty room with no furniture — bounce sound back into the microphone a fraction of a second after the original, which reads as an echo or a hollow, distant quality even when the speaker is close. This is a property of the room, not the source, and it is often mistaken for a bad microphone.
Other voices
A nearby conversation, a television, a second person talking over the one you are recording. Speech is the hardest kind of background noise to remove after the fact, because it sits in exactly the same frequency range as the voice you want.
Distance is the setting that actually matters
Move a phone twice as far from a speaker and the voice gets noticeably quieter relative to everything else in the room, because the noise around you does not fall off the same way — a steady hum from a fan across the room stays roughly as loud regardless of where the phone sits, while the voice keeps losing ground as it moves away. Halving the distance to the speaker does more for a recording than any setting the app offers. This is the single biggest lever, and it is free.
What you can control before you press record
- Pick the quieter of two available rooms, even if it is less convenient. A small carpeted room beats a large tiled one.
- Get the phone close to the speaker rather than compensating with volume or a setting afterwards.
- Turn off what you can — a fan, a window unit, a dishwasher mid-cycle — rather than trying to record around it.
- Close a window before an open one. Traffic and wind noise are much cheaper to prevent than to remove later.
- A soft surface under or near the phone — a folded cloth, a cushion — cuts down on the hard-surface echo described above, if the room itself cannot be changed.
None of this needs to be perfect. A recording does not have to sound like a studio to transcribe well or to be pleasant to listen back to; it needs the voice to be clearly louder than everything else, which is a much lower bar.
What does not fix noise
A higher quality setting changes how finely the microphone signal is sampled, not what was in the room when it was captured. If the noise was there, a higher setting records it in the same detail as the voice — it does not separate the two. The same is true of which transcription engine ends up handling the audio afterwards: whether recognition runs on the phone or falls back to a server, it is working from the same recording either way, and neither can reconstruct a voice that a fan or a wall of traffic already buried.
This is also why fixing a transcript after the fact only goes so far. Editing corrects a wrong word the recognizer guessed; it cannot recover a stretch where the recognizer had almost nothing to work with because the room was the problem, not the words.
