Why does my iPhone recording sound choppy?

Short answer: somewhere along the path from the microphone to the file, a small stretch of audio data arrived late or got missed, and the file has a stutter or a gap where it should be continuous. That is a different failure from a recording being quiet, noisy or distorted — those are about what the microphone picked up. A choppy recording is about whether every bit of what it picked up actually made it into the file in order.

Choppy is a specific pattern, not a vague complaint. The voice is there and it is at a normal level — until a syllable or a fraction of a second gets clipped out, stutters, or repeats oddly, and then the recording carries on normally again. It can happen once in an hour or several times in a minute. Either way, it is not the same problem as a recording that sounds thin, muffled or noisy throughout, because those are about what arrived at the microphone. What a dropout actually is

Recording audio on a phone is a continuous pipeline: the microphone hands off a steady stream of samples, that stream gets encoded, and the encoded result gets written to storage, over and over, many times a second, for as long as the recording runs. Under normal conditions this keeps up in real time without you ever thinking about it. A dropout is what happens when one link in that chain briefly falls behind — the write to storage stalls for a moment, or the processor is busy with something else right when it needed to hand off the next chunk of audio. When that happens, there is a short stretch where the app either has to skip ahead, repeat a fragment, or leave a small gap, because the alternative is to stop recording entirely. The result is the stutter or skip you hear on playback.

This is different from silence in the room or from clipping on a loud sound. Nothing about the acoustic content caused it — the room could have been perfectly quiet and the take otherwise clean. The break is mechanical, not acoustic.

The most common cause: a Bluetooth microphone

Recording through AirPods or another Bluetooth headset routes audio over a radio link instead of a physical connection, and that link is shared with everything else the connection is doing and is vulnerable to the same things any Bluetooth connection is — distance, walls, other 2.4 GHz devices nearby, or simply a moment of interference. A dropped or delayed packet over that link shows up as exactly this kind of stutter, because the audio has to travel over the air before it ever reaches the file. A recording made on the phone's built-in microphone does not have this extra hop, which is a big part of why choppiness shows up far more often with a Bluetooth mic in the loop than without one.

Storage that is low, not necessarily empty

A phone that has genuinely run out of storage stops a recording outright rather than making it choppy — that is a different, more final problem. But storage that is merely low, on a phone otherwise juggling other apps and background tasks, can slow down individual writes without stopping them, and a write that takes noticeably longer than usual is exactly the kind of delay that produces a brief stutter rather than a clean pause. The fix looks the same either way: freeing up space before a long or important recording removes this as a variable, even short of the point where the phone would refuse to record at all.

Everything else competing for the same phone

A recording is not the only thing happening on the phone while it runs. Other apps doing heavy work in the background, a phone that is warm and throttling itself to cool down, or simply an older device under more load than it is comfortable with can all make the processor briefly slower to respond than the audio pipeline needs. None of these are things a recording app can fully insulate itself from, because they are happening at the level of the whole device, not inside any one app.

What the quality setting has to do with it

Not much, but not nothing either. A higher sample rate means more audio data to encode and write every second, which asks marginally more of the same pipeline described above. On a phone that already has headroom to spare, that difference is not enough to matter. On a phone that is already low on storage or already under load from something else, standard quality asks less of a strained pipeline than ultra does, which can occasionally be the difference between a dropout and none. It is a secondary factor, though — fixing the underlying cause (storage, Bluetooth, background load) does far more than switching quality settings does.

Telling it apart from a recording that stops entirely
