Why does my iPhone recording sound distorted?

Short answer: something arrived louder than the microphone could represent, and the peaks got chopped flat rather than recorded faithfully. That is a different failure from quiet or noisy audio, it happens before any setting gets a say, and once it is in the file there is no undoing it.

Distorted is a specific complaint, not a vague one. It is not the whole recording sounding thin or buried — it is a harsh, buzzy break that shows up right on the loudest syllables, a shout, a laugh, a burst of applause, while the quieter stretches around it sound completely normal. That pattern is the fingerprint of clipping, and it is worth naming correctly, because the fix for it has almost nothing in common with the fix for a recording that is quiet or noisy throughout.

What clipping actually is

A microphone turns air pressure into an electrical signal, and at some point that signal gets measured and stored as numbers — a process with a ceiling. There is a highest value the system can represent, and a sound loud enough to demand something above that ceiling does not get rejected or scaled down. The peak simply gets pinned at the maximum the format allows, flattening what should have been a smooth curve into a flat top. A waveform with a rounded peak sounds like a voice. A waveform with the top sheared off sounds like a crack or a buzz, because a sudden flat edge is exactly the kind of sound a speaker driver reproduces as distortion.

This happens at the input stage, before the recording is a file at all. It has nothing to do with compression, the container format, or anything that happens afterwards — by the time there is an .m4a to talk about, the damage, if any, is already done.

What actually causes it on a phone

Speaking, singing or laughing right at the microphone

A phone mic is built around normal conversational volume at a normal distance. A sudden shout, a laugh right next to it, or singing into it at close range can deliver far more pressure than that, and the input has no headroom held in reserve for it. This is the single most common cause, and it is also the easiest one to see coming — if you know a loud moment is likely, the microphone is the wrong place to be close to it.

A loud external source

A PA speaker, a band, a car horn, anything genuinely loud in the room rather than close to the mic can clip the same way a raised voice does. The mechanism is identical — it is about how much sound pressure is actually reaching the microphone, not about what is producing it.

Automatic level adjustment catching a peak too late

Phone microphones do some automatic levelling to keep normal speech in a usable range without a manual dial to fuss with. That adjustment reacts to what it is hearing, which means it needs a moment to respond — and a sudden spike arrives faster than that moment. The adjustment settling back down after a shout is often exactly what a sharp, brief crackle right at the start of a loud sound turns out to be.

What does not cause it, and cannot fix it

The recording quality setting has nothing to do with any of this. Standard, high and ultra change the sample rate a recording is captured at — how finely the signal is measured over time — not how much signal the input can accept before it runs out of room. A clipped peak at standard quality is exactly as clipped at ultra; a higher sample rate just stores the same flat-topped waveform in finer time slices. Mono versus stereo makes no difference either, for the same reason: neither touches headroom. If a setting claimed to fix distortion, it would be claiming something the sample rate was never responsible for in the first place.

Telling it apart from the other two complaints

Quiet, noisy and distorted are three different problems with three different fixes, and mixing them up sends you looking in the wrong place.

A recording can have more than one of these at once — a quiet room with one loud shout in the middle is both fine and clipped, in different places — which is why it is worth listening for the pattern rather than assuming a single global cause.

Catching it before it happens

The direct fix is distance from whatever is about to be loud. If you know a laugh, a cheer or a raised voice is coming, do not have the microphone right up against the source of it — a few inches further back is usually enough, because sound pressure falls off quickly with distance. For a source that is loud throughout, like a PA speaker, back the phone off further than intuition suggests before you start, and check with a short test rather than guessing.

For anything where you cannot predict the loud moment in advance, hearing the input as it happens is the only way to catch it while you can still move the phone. That is a different problem from checking a recording afterwards, because by then the take is already made.

Once it is already in the recording

Clipping destroys information, and destroyed information does not come back. A sample pinned at the maximum value has no record of how much louder the original sound actually was — there is nothing left to reconstruct from. Editing a transcript afterwards does not touch this either: a clipped stretch gives a speech recognizer a harsh, altered signal to work with rather than the sound that was actually said, and that is a different kind of gap than a wrong word a recognizer guessed at. Some of it is more forgivable than it sounds — a single clipped laugh in an otherwise clean recording rarely matters — but a recording that clips through every loud phrase, an animated conversation or a lecture with a booming voice, is usually worth re-recording with more distance if the chance comes around again.
