Why does my iPhone recording sound tinny?

Short answer: something between your voice and the microphone is thinning out the low end, leaving mostly the brittle, papery part of the sound behind. Distance, a hard room and a Bluetooth accessory doing the listening are the usual causes, and none of them are fixed by raising the quality setting.

A full voice has weight to it — a low end that gives it body, sitting under the consonants and vowels that carry the actual words. Tinny is what is left when that weight goes missing: the words are all there, but the recording sounds thin, a little metallic, closer to a cheap speaker or an old telephone line than to how the person actually sounds in the room. It is the near-opposite of a muffled recording, which loses the top end and keeps the boom. Tinny loses the bottom and keeps the edge.

Why it happens

Distance from the microphone

A voice captured close still carries most of its natural low end. The same voice from across a room reaches the microphone as a mix of a much fainter direct sound and the room bouncing it back, and the reflected part skews toward the higher end of the spectrum. The farther the phone sits from the speaker, the more of what gets captured is that thinner, reflected mix rather than the fuller sound at the source.

A hard, bare room

Tile, glass and bare walls reflect high frequencies far more readily than they reflect low ones, which is why a bathroom or an empty room sounds bright and a furnished living room sounds warmer for the same voice. Record in a hard room and the reflections mixed into the file are already skewed thin before distance even becomes a factor.

The phone's own microphone is small by design

A phone microphone is a tiny capsule built to fit inside a few millimetres of case, and small capsules physically extend less into low frequencies than a dedicated recording microphone does. That is a property of the hardware, not a fault in a particular phone or app, and it is part of why distance and room matter more on a phone than they would with a larger microphone that has more low end to lose in the first place.

If AirPods or another Bluetooth accessory are connected, iOS can route the microphone through them instead of the phone's own mic, and that path is built for call clarity, not full-bodied audio — it is a narrower frequency band, and thin is exactly how a narrow band sounds. That case is common enough to be worth its own answer, and it is one you can rule out in under a minute.

What does not fix it

It is tempting to reach for a higher quality setting the way you might reach for a higher photo resolution. For tone, that does not work the way it does for sharpness. A quality setting changes the sample rate — how finely the microphone signal gets measured — which raises the ceiling of frequencies captured and the size of the file. It does not add low end that was never picked up in the first place, because a higher sample rate cannot recover a part of the signal that never registered at the microphone. If the thinness came from distance, the room or a Bluetooth accessory, the highest setting available will capture that thin sound in more detail, not fill in what is missing from it.

Why does a recording sound thinner with AirPods connected?

A connected Bluetooth accessory can end up doing the recording, not just the playback, and that path is built for call clarity rather than full-bodied sound. Taking the AirPods out or turning off Bluetooth before you record hands the job back to the phone's own microphone.
