Why do I sound different in a voice recording on iPhone?

Short answer: the recording is accurate. What sounds strange is not the file — it is the first time you are hearing your voice the way everyone else already does, without the extra low end your own skull normally adds while you talk.

Almost everyone who plays back a recording of their own voice for the first time has the same reaction: that does not sound like me. It happens on a good microphone as reliably as on a bad one, on an expensive recorder as reliably as a phone, which is the first clue that the file is rarely the actual explanation.

Two paths, while you are talking

When you speak, the sound reaches your own ears by two routes at once, and only one of them is available to anybody else. Air conduction is the familiar one: sound waves leave your mouth, travel through the room, and arrive at your eardrum from outside — the same route your voice takes to reach a friend standing next to you, or a microphone sitting on a desk.

Bone conduction is the other one, and it only exists for you. The vibration of your own vocal cords travels directly through the bones of your jaw and skull to your inner ear, skipping the air entirely. Bone carries low frequencies more efficiently than air does, so the bone-conducted portion of what you hear yourself say is weighted toward the low end. Add that to the air-conducted portion arriving at the same instant, and the voice you hear while talking is fuller and deeper than the sound that actually left your mouth.

What a microphone actually captures

A phone has no skull to conduct through. Its microphone only ever receives the air-conducted signal — the sound that traveled out into the room, the exact signal a friend standing next to you receives. It has nothing else to blend it with, so what gets recorded is not a distorted version of your voice; it is the only version that was ever actually leaving your mouth. The mismatch you hear on playback is between that and the fuller, bone-boosted version you are used to hearing from the inside, not between the recording and reality.

Why no setting fixes this

Distance from the microphone, a reflective room, or a phone propped against something that muffles it all change the actual captured audio, not just your reaction to hearing yourself. If a recording sounds thin, muffled, or distant on top of feeling unfamiliar, that second part has a fixable cause — placement and the room, not your voice.

Common questions

Is a recording of my voice more accurate than how I hear myself talking?

In one sense, yes. A microphone only picks up the sound that actually left your mouth into the room, the same version everyone else already hears. What you hear internally while speaking includes bone-conducted sound a microphone has no way to pick up — that is the part missing from a recording, not something added to it in error.

Does recording at a higher quality setting change how my voice sounds in the file?

It captures the room more accurately across a wider frequency range, but it does not add anything back. The fuller sound you hear yourself make while talking comes from bone conduction, and no quality setting was ever going to record that — a microphone was never in a position to.

Will I get used to how I sound recorded?

If my recording sounds muffled or distant on top of "not like me," is that the same issue?

No. Muffled or distant audio is usually about microphone placement or the room, and it is worth checking separately. The gap between your internal voice and a recording is present in every clean recording ever made; being additionally hard to hear is not, and that part can be fixed.
