Why does my iPhone recording have a hissing or static sound?

They get lumped together because both show up as an unwanted sound sitting under or over the voice, but they are not the same problem. A steady hiss is usually self-noise that got louder because the recording itself was quiet. A crackly static is usually something physically interfering with the microphone. Fixing one does nothing for the other.

Neither of these is the fan-in-the-background kind of noise, and neither is the electrical buzz that shows up specifically while a phone is plugged in and charging. Hissing

A thin, even, high-frequency sound spread evenly through the whole recording, present even in the silent stretches between words. It sounds like tape hiss, or the static-ish wash you hear turning up a stereo with nothing playing. It does not come and go — it is a constant layer sitting underneath everything.

Static or crackling

Sharp, irregular pops, crackles or a scratchy texture that comes and goes rather than sitting there evenly. It sounds less like noise the microphone picked up from the air and more like something interfering with the signal itself — closer to a bad connection than a quiet room.

The distinction matters because the fix for one usually does nothing for the other. A hiss problem is about how loud the recording was to begin with. A static problem is almost always about what is touching, or blocking, the microphone.

What actually causes a steady hiss

Every microphone has a small amount of self-noise — a noise floor that exists even in a perfectly silent room, from the physical process of turning sound into an electrical signal in the first place. Normally it is too quiet to notice. It becomes audible when a recording is otherwise quiet and something raises the overall level to compensate, because raising the level raises the self-noise along with the voice. A phone recording from further away than usual, or of someone speaking softly, is the setup where this shows up most, since the same automatic leveling that helps a soft voice reach an audible volume is also lifting the noise floor sitting underneath it.

This is why hiss tends to show up on exactly the recordings that were already borderline too quiet, rather than at random. It is not a fault appearing out of nowhere — it is the cost of pulling a soft signal up to a usable level, paid in noise rather than in silence.

What actually causes static or crackling

This one is almost always mechanical rather than electrical. A case with a cutout that partially covers a microphone opening, a build-up of lint or dust in the microphone port from sitting in a pocket, or the phone resting against fabric or a rough surface that vibrates against the case, can all put an irregular scratch or crackle into a recording that has nothing to do with the room being noisy. None of it looks like a problem when you glance at the phone, because the microphone opening is small enough that a partial obstruction is easy to miss.

A phone moving against something during the recording — sliding in a pocket, resting on a table that gets bumped, a case flexing slightly — produces the same kind of irregular pop rather than a steady tone, which is the giveaway that it is contact, not the air, causing it.

What a quality setting does not do about either one

Standard, high and ultra change the sample rate a recording is captured at — how finely the signal gets measured over time — not what reached the microphone before that measurement happened. A noise floor raised by a quiet recording is raised the same way at every quality tier, and a crackle from an obstructed microphone port is captured in exactly the same detail whether the setting is standard or ultra. Neither hiss nor static is a quality-setting problem, the same way background noise from a fan is not one either.

What actually helps

None of this needs to be exact. A recording does not need to be silent between words to sound fine or to transcribe well — it needs the self-noise and any crackle to sit well beneath the voice, which is a much lower bar than eliminating either one entirely.

Does a phone case cause static in a recording?
