Why does my iPhone recording have wind noise?
Short answer: air moving directly across the microphone, not just noise happening to be in the air around you. That distinction is the whole reason the usual background-noise advice — find a quieter room — does not fully apply outside, and why no setting undoes it once it is in the file.
A recording made indoors with a fan running and one made outside on a breezy day can look similarly "noisy" on paper, but they are not the same problem, and they do not share a fix. A fan is a sound, arriving at the microphone the same way a voice does, just from a different source. Wind, at close range, is often not a sound the microphone is picking up at all — it is air physically moving across the microphone opening, and that is a different mechanism with a different cure.
Two different things people call "wind noise"
Trees moving, flags snapping, a breeze through a window — that is wind making an actual sound somewhere in the environment, and a microphone captures it the same way it captures traffic or a fan: as background noise arriving from a distance. That kind responds to the usual fixes, mainly getting the phone closer to whoever is talking so their voice outweighs it.
The rumble that ruins an outdoor recording is usually the other kind: air moving directly across the microphone port itself. A microphone works by sensing pressure changes, and turbulent air hitting it produces large, chaotic pressure changes that have nothing to do with anything actually making a sound. That is why it comes through as a low rolling roar, or a series of thumps on a gustier day, rather than as a noise you could point to a source for. It is also why it can appear and vanish in a few seconds as the direction of the air changes, even though nothing around you got any louder.
Why a phone microphone is especially exposed to it
Dedicated recorders and lavalier microphones often ship with a foam windscreen for exactly this reason — a small barrier of open-cell foam that breaks up turbulent airflow before it reaches the microphone element, without meaningfully blocking the sound of an actual voice. A phone has no such thing built in. The microphone opening is a small hole in the case, doing double duty for calls and everything else, with nothing between it and moving air. That is the real reason phone recordings are disproportionately vulnerable to this compared to purpose-built audio gear — not a worse microphone, an unshielded one.
What actually helps
- Block the direct path of air to the microphone. Your own body, a jacket, or a doorway between the phone and the wind's direction does more than almost anything else, because it is addressing the mechanism rather than the volume.
- Turn so the bottom edge of the phone, where the microphone openings usually sit, faces away from the wind rather than into it.
- Move to the sheltered side of something solid — a wall, a car, a hedge. This is a genuine windbreak, different from just finding a "quieter" spot, because moving air is what you are blocking, not sound.
- Cup a hand loosely around the microphone end without touching the case itself. Contact with the phone introduces its own scraping and tapping noise, which is a worse trade than the wind it is meant to stop.
- If none of that is practical, get physically closer to whoever is talking. It does not reduce the wind, but it raises the voice relative to it, the same lever that helps with any other kind of noise.
None of this needs to be perfect or permanent. A short test recording before committing to a spot — ten seconds, played back — tells you in a few seconds whether a position actually works, which is faster than guessing and re-recording after the fact.
What does not help
A higher quality setting changes how finely the microphone signal is sampled; it has nothing to do with what reached the microphone in the first place; a turbulent gust recorded at the highest setting is exactly as turbulent as one recorded at the lowest. Turning system volume up on playback does the same as it does for any other noise problem — makes the wind louder along with everything else, not clearer. And once wind noise is in a file, there is no undoing it afterward the way there is no undoing background noise afterward; anything that reduces it also touches the voice sitting in the same frequency range, because the two were never separate signals to begin with.
What it does to a transcript
Heavy wind noise degrades what a speech recognizer has to work with in the same way any other loud, unrelated sound does — it is competing with the voice for the same portion of the signal, whether recognition runs on the phone or falls back to Apple's server. A stretch recorded during a strong gust can come back blank or garbled even though the person spoke clearly, because very little of their voice actually made it through cleanly. That is a reason to fix the position while recording, not a transcript problem to correct afterward — editing can fix a wrong word the recognizer guessed, but it cannot recover a sentence the recognizer never really heard.
Catching it while you can still fix it
This is the one situation where hearing the recording as it happens matters more than almost anywhere else, because wind noise is so position-dependent that turning a few degrees or stepping behind a wall can fix it completely, and none of that is obvious from watching a waveform or a level meter. Finding out once you are back inside means the moment to reposition has already passed.

Does a higher quality setting reduce wind noise?

Why does covering the microphone with my hand help?
It blocks the direct path of moving air to the microphone opening, which is the actual cause of the rumble. Keep your hand off the case itself — contact with the phone adds its own scraping noise, which trades one problem for another.
Can noise reduction fix wind noise after the fact?
Only partly, and only for a mild case. Wind noise sits in a similar frequency range to a voice, so reducing it also touches the speech underneath. It helps more to prevent it at the time than to process it out afterward.
Does wind noise ruin a transcript?
